About PA Safe Routes to School Resource Center and PSATS
What is the PA SRTS Resource Center?
The PA Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Resource Center provides schools, parents, students, municipalities, and other community members with tools necessary to develop, implement, and maintain safe, healthy walking and bicycling routes for students.
The PA SRTS Resource Center is a joint venture of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS), the administrator for the noninfrastructure part of Pennsylvania’s SRTS program. In this capacity, PSATS has developed www.saferoutespa.org as the central clearinghouse for all resources, training, and funding opportunities available in Pennsylvania through the federal SRTS program.
The resource center is housed at PSATS’ offices in Enola, Cumberland County. On behalf of PennDOT, PSATS staff members administer the noninfrastructure portions of the SRTS program. These staff members are also available to answer questions about Safe Routes to School and provide support to schools and communities interested in starting or expanding an SRTS program. To reach the PA SRTS Resource Center, email info@saferoutespa.org or call PSATS at (717) 763-0930.
What is PSATS?
In February 2011, PennDOT awarded the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) a three-year contract to administer the noninfrastructure portions of Pennsylvania’s SRTS program.
PSATS is a nonprofit, service organization that represents Pennsylvania’s 1,455 townships of the second class and some 10,000 elected township officials. Since its founding in 1921, the association has existed as an information clearinghouse to help municipal officials better understand their duties and responsibilities of office and to enhance their capacity to deliver essential services to residents as efficiently and effectively as possible. In recent years, PSATS has expanded its scope to deliver and manage a wide variety of training and other programs on behalf of the commonwealth.
To carry out its responsibilities under the SRTS contract with PennDOT, PSATS has joined forces with its primary subcontractor, Pennoni Associates, Inc., a multidisciplined consulting engineering firm with 20 offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. With the help of Pennoni to provide technical expertise on certain aspects of the SRTS program, PSATS develops and promotes a wide array of programs and resources that aim to expand the reach of the SRTS program in Pennsylvania.
